       This is neither widespread nor well known. It is somewhat smaller than the golden columbine, with
       numerous yellow flowers and long spurs that tend not to be spreading, and which can look like a
       school of fish swimming in the same direction when the wind blows.

       This is one of the larger columbines with bright yellow flowers up to 3 inches across and long
       spreading spurs.  Different populations have their own flowering preferences from April to September,
       according to their environment (streamside or forest) and elevation, which can range from 3,000 to
       11,000 feet.

      This is very distinctive with diminutive glaucous leaves and attractive red and yellow flowers.
      Since it is found only in the high country on limestone, there is no basis for the name "desertorum".

         A largish, sprawling, and very beautiful (formosa = beautiful) columbine, having numerous
         nodding red flowers with yellow tubular petals, and unusual spreading red sepals.  The
         leaves tend to be large and repeatedly dissected with picturesque prominent veins.
         This plant is not at all common in southern California, but this summer I was very fortunate in
         stumbling upon a really nice colony.

         Large blue flowers barely surpassing the delicate fans of blue-green leaves of this dwarf columbine
         make it an ideal rock garden plant.  This hardy but rare high altitude gem thrives on limestone
         scree slopes and is one of the most unique and beautiful of all the columbines.

       The common name is not quite appropriate, since this flower is found over a much wider area
        than the Chiricahua Mountains, in one form or another, and even over a wide elevation range
        from 4000 to 10,000 feet.  The numerous red flowers with tinges of yellow and picturesque
        leaves, however, make it attractive in any of its various forms.

        This is a spectacular tree and one of the most beautiful in the Southwest.  A combination of  smooth
        white to red-tinged, peeling bark, bright red berries, or the beautiful pink flowers, attractive evergreen
        leaves, as well as the crooked branches and spreading form make this a truly unusual tree.

       "Chuparosa", as it is known in Sonora, bears a profuse number of red flowers and is adored by
       hummingbirds, begins flowering very early in the spring and will bloom all summer if conditions
       permit.  It's found among rocks on slopes and along washes from 1000 to 4000 feet.

       A shapely shrub that can reach tree size, and which has handsome little holly-like leaves and bright
       yellow flowers in the spring and early summer.  It is found between 4000 and 7000 feet and produces
       numerous plum colored berries in late summer.

      Variations of bouvardia are found throughout Mexico but not very far north into Arizona.
      Here they are almost shrubby and very attractive with bright green leaves in whorls that almost
      appear evergreen and long tubular, bright red flowers in honeysuckle-like arrangements that
      hummingbirds love.  They grow to about 2 to 3 feet, bloom from spring to autumn, and range
      from 3000 to 9000 feet.
